Hail the Kings

Friday, December 3rd, 2010

Kings of Leon have officially announced details of two huge headline stadium shows for South Africa in 2011 that will see the band perform in Johannesburg and Cape Town during March next year.

The tour is presented by Nokia and 5fm, in conjunction with Big Concerts, and is scheduled for Cape Town Stadium on 24 March and FNB Stadium on 27 March.

Tickets for the two concerts will be available through Computicket from Saturday the 4 December at 09:00 and prices will range from R215 to R590.

Their highly acclaimed fifth album ‘Come Around Sundown’ became their third consecutive album to debut at #1 when it topped the UK album charts on release, claiming both the biggest week one sales of the year and the biggest ever first week digital sales along the way.

The album has already registered Gold in South Africa on the back of the first single, ‘Radiocative’, which soared into the Top 10 on 5fm while the band’s new single ‘Pyro’ has just been playlisted on the radio station.

“Kings of Leon has been the most requested band to see live by South Africans for several years now so 5fm is anticipating them to continue their trend of selling out stadiums in record time in South Africa as they have done the world over”, commented 5fm Program Manager, Vukile Zondi.

In the UK, their forthcoming brace of December arena shows sold out in seconds and the upcoming South African tour dates are set to be one of the highlights of next year’s live music calendar.

Duran Duran shows canned

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Merely a week before the tour was meant to kick off, Duran Duran have had to cancel their upcoming South African tour.

This is apparently because the show promoter defaulted on the contract, leaving the band members with no other option but to cancel the shows.

The band say they are “extremely sorry” to be disappointing their fans.

Lead singer Simon Le Bon said in a statement “The worst part of this for us is disappointing our South African fans, who we were really excited to be performing for again. We had planned to debut some of our new record on this run, as well as playing many of the familiar songs from our catalogue.”

“We haven’t been to South Africa for a long time – and were looking forward to reconnecting with the audiences there. Our hope is that we are able to reschedule these dates shortly as part of the World Tour next year.”

This trip would have been Duran Duran’s start of the release campaign around their new studio album, ‘All You Need Is Now’.

U2 Cape Town tickets sold out

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

Concert organisers Big Concerts and Live Nation Global Touring, a live-events company based in Beverly Hills, California, have announced that the Cape Town leg of U2’s 360 Tour on 18 February is officially sold out.

Big Concerts’ CEO Attie van Wyk says: “This is an absolutely incredible response, which justifies South Africa as a premier live music destination.”

In an effort to accommodate fans who were unable to secure a ticket, the organisers are considering installing temporary seating on the upper tiers similar to the solution used during the FIFA 2010 Soccer World Cup.

A limited number of hospitality, suite and VIP packages are also available for the Cape Town show through Warwick Hospitality and Events.

The Johannesburg show, scheduled for 13 February at FNB Stadium (formerly Soccer City) is currently 85% sold, and Big Concerts says it expects the remaining tickets to be snapped up within the next week, which would make this show the biggest stop of the U2 360 Tour globally.

Happy Birthday RocknRoller!!

Saturday, October 16th, 2010

366 days ago marked the humble beginnings of RocknRoller.co.za.

The first blog post was inspired Mr Peter O’Donoghue. You know, the lead singer of She Man Lion?

Suffice to say that a lot has happened since that crazy night at the Mars lounge! This here blog has had 4 “extreme” makeovers since then…

and we even had a current 2OVfm radio celeb mr. Luca Vincenco blogging for us for a few months.

Thanks to all the RocknRollers who have helped us and “liked” us along the way. Especially Karen Hilliard, who basically manages our Facebook page and who has done an amazing job in spreading the RnR gospel. Also Jon from Cassette, for being an exemplary RocknRoller and his willingness to help out with ideas and handing out RnR stickers. David from Shen Promotions for those backstage passes… Pete, for being the inspiration that kick-started this journey, Bronny for being the wittiest and most faithful RnR disciple and last but not least AD or Adriaan – my partner in crime and the coolest roadie this world has ever seen!

Excuse me while I wipe a tear from my eye…

My… how she has grown?

Here’s to the future of RnR! Mind-bending parties, throbbing headaches, hart-braking melodies, soul-shaking riffs, real leather jackets, skinny jeans, heart-breaks, anarchy and a truckload of rage!

Rock on! For there is no better life!

The Most Important New Bands In South Africa Right Now

Friday, August 13th, 2010

2010 has seen new and exciting bands performing on the festival front, with familiar acts who rose to success in the last recent years having ridden the wave all the way until the foamie section.

But as it always has and always will be, things happen in cycles – the other side of the arch, the pedal pushed from bottom to top and back around again – and there is a fresh insurgence of new bands that you need to see live soon.

Holiday Murray

a regular at shows

A folk-rock quartet hailing from the English ‘burbs of Cape Town is making pure music that is remarkably easy to love. The aesthetic is perfect, sing-along hooks and snaps that, for lack of a better way of saying it, just feels so damn good!

Quite easily the most important band in South Africa right now, any self-respecting festival organiser would be a fool to leave this big-stage ready band off their line-up.

Holiday Murray are set to release their début album in September.

The Revelators

This garaged 3-piece have been performing ‘a low-fi style of garage fuzz that communicates their love for simplicity in music’ and has captured a small but high appreciative following. Their analogue-recorded début album, We’ll Make Them Like New, was released earlier this year, and other than that and the live shows this mediaphobic band seems unlikely to share much more but their will to keep things as simple as possible.

The Revelators perform tonight at Hidden Cellar, Stb.

Pity The  Fool

Straight out of Pretoria but making alternative pop-rock sounds ready for summer coastal sun. Pity The Fool could have made more foresighted decisions regarding their name, but that is easily countered by the oft-asked, what’s in a name anyway?

This four-piece released their Extended Play EP in 2009 which produced the ‘Shades of Grey’ single which tapped into surprised attention on television and radio airplay.

The band has also realised the creative advantage of working with constant visual member, in the form of Eckardt Kasselman who has done a large amount of the band’s visuals.

Be Phat Motel present Sweetheart

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

Yes, that is Inge Beckmann.

But, unfortunately for Lark die-hards, this is not a new video for a surprise new song from the largely adored South African band.

Ms. Beckmann stars as the lead in this film, dubbed “a black and white cross-genre mind-bender.”

Set against the backdrop of an escalating cold war, ‘Sweetheart’ sees a young housewife alone in a remote farmhouse when her family don’t return from a routine trip to town. She sets off in search of them, but what she finds instead is a landscape seemingly derelict. She must navigate a series of unsettling encounters to find answers in a world that will reveal itself to be a marked alternative to the world we remember. [read more]

Foto Na Dans present Die Vloed Documentary

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

26 July, Monday saw the beginning of a massive roll-out campaign by Foto Na Dans – all in preparation and hype building for their latest album due in August entitled Die Vloed (The Flood).

Airing daily this entire week on DsTV’s MK channel 324 will be 5 episodes (a new episode each day) which document the ‘making of’ the new album. Mind you, this is by no means your regular ‘making off’ – the sharp eye and ear will soon realise this is all more of a mockie than a doccie… how can you miss it though? Just look at Alex dripping in branding, or Clem the sound engineer claiming he ‘makes sure the car runs’, and vocalist Le-Roi discussing ‘slaapies en meditasies’ (naps and meditation). If you didn’t click that there is a big piss-taking happening here, then you’re losing out on some of the finest humour and state-of-affairs commentary in SA music.

Make sure to catch the entire series as it rolls out on television and online, via the band’s YouTube channel which happens to have shot up in the popularity rankings in South African channels.

Hats off to Jacques Koudstaal, Jaco Smit and Testify Films on a job very well done!

You’ve obviously enjoyed The Office, right?

aKING ‘Against All Odds’ Video Launch

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

The Against All Odds music video was produced and directed by Dean Leslie and Greg Fell of The African Attachment, who also produced 12Mile Stone – a documentary on the history of the Bellville music scene.

The African Attachment has also produced music videos for, among others, Ashtray Electric, Parlotones and The Dirty Skirts. With the music video for Against All Odds, says drummer Snake, the band felt “like doing something humorous, and we thought this song lent itself to that. We’ve also wanted to work with The African Attachment for a long time. This shoot was a lot of fun.”

The video sees, among many other things, Snake as a Goth and Laudo dancing like a maniac. “When aKING approached us, Dean Leslie and I spent a few days listening to the song and then started putting ideas together, says co-producer Greg Fell.  “We came up with a character who had absolutely no inhibitions and the concept pretty much grew from there.”

The video features actor Asher Stoltz, known from the “All The Single Ladies” Vodacom advert. According to Snake, Asher’s on-set antics had the cast pissing themselves for two days solid. “We knew that the right actor was crucial to the success of the video”, said Greg. “I’d seen the Vodacom ad ripping off “All The Single Ladies”. We auditioned the guy over Skype. He was perfect.”

You can put it under a No Hot Ash/ Geen Warm As dustbin and it will still sprout prickly pears and braai grids when you least expect it. You can make the truth wear a T-shirt, but you can’t stop the truth from taking off that T-shirt and walking the dust roads in underpants alone while mumbling about being “Jeremy de Tolly” or having “a six-gun by my side” or something about “kraaibraai”.
